Boss tube amp expander11/25/2023 ![]() ![]() Once you get close to that DB level it does clean up more but then it becomes a guessing game with the reactive load options. I found that the lower in volume you go on the TAE the more it drives the amp and in order to match the DB level of the non-attenuated amp you have to turn the volume up pretty high (around 3:00 on the dial). I did a DB test last night first not using the TAE then using it. It pretty much adds drive and colors the tone to amps I've put through it (SV20h and JTM45). I ended up picking up the Tube Amp Expander last month from Guitar Center (45 day return policy helps a lot! haha) and after putting it through the paces I'm not very happy with how it reacts/sounds. Of course the PS-2 works incredibly well when used as a basic attenuator for a bigger amp. Suddenly this cheap little amp sounds like it costs $1,500 and now has tone shaping and an excellent FX loop. When I hook it up to my PS-2 it actually competes with my bigger Marshall and Mesa amps. I have a small 1W head (Blackheart Killer Ant) that has no FX loop or tone control, only a volume knob, so it was kind of limited. One application that I didn't think I'd use it for but ended up using a lot is its ability to make a small practice amp sound like a much bigger amp. It's very transparent and has lots of tone shaping available if you think you need it. It also costs significantly less than the Boss TAE and also fits nicely on top of any amp head. It has a linear volume control, two (3 position) post-attenuation EQ switches, presence and depth controls, an excellent FX loop that seems to work better than those on my amps, and you can match any combination of (4, 8, or 16 ohm) amp and cab impedances. While the Boss TAE looks like an amazing product, I realized that it had a lot more features than I would probably ever use, so I got the Fryette Power Station 2, which is also a reamper but the power amp part is all tube (50W). Same as you, I only require attenuation without sucking tone away. ![]() Help me out guys, take control of my wallet Any other units that offer this and only this? Maybe not cost as much? The click units don't seem to get the sweet spot as far as volume goes. Right now I want to crank my JTM45 without blowing heads off! haha The thing I like most about the unit is the liner volume/attenuation knob. Not that concerned with the IR side of things although it could be a bonus thing later on, just not my concern right now. The only thing at this point I care about is the "attenuation" part of it (I use the term loosely since I know it's a reamper not a attenuator). I've read several forums and watched several videos and still can't make up my mind because they all seem to dive into the IR side of things and focus on that. Normally I'd just buy and try but given the cost of the unit I keep going back and forth with myself. I'm basically looking for good/bad experiences with the Boss TAE. We all know how the internet can be, the best place in the world for reviews! ![]()
